March 1 @ 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm
The public is invited to an important event March 1 in which Luz María Henríquez and Micah Kubic, Executive Directors of the Missouri and Kansas affiliates of the American Civil Liberties Union, will discuss ACLU advocacy happening locally and nationally. They will speak about the challenges facing both states in defending voting rights, and what individual citizens can do to get involved, to protect our liberties and promote democracy at this crucial time in our nation’s history.
Anne Calvert, past president of the League of Women Voters of Greater Kansas City, will moderate the event.
Many people want to make a difference in their world but don’t know where to start. This event will provide information and motivation for positive community engagement.
Attendees will also meet representatives from local organizations dedicated to women’s rights, voting rights and the environment. Organizations will include the Women in Politics Foundation, the League of Women Voters, the ACLU, the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Missouri River Bird Observatory.
This event is inspired by the memory of Mary Lindsay, a board member of the non-partisan League of Women Voters and a member of All Souls Church. Mary dedicated her life to serving people and was passionate about voting rights, social justice and the preservation of nature, especially her beloved bluebirds and trees.
Her husband George Harris’ book, Be Like Mary, is an inspiring journey into the life of his remarkable partner. Copies will be available free of charge. Donations will go to All Souls Church and the League of Women Voters.
The event is FREE. Preregistration is encouraged. A book copy will be available for anyone who pre-registers.
